Moyie and Kootenai River country, wooded acreage, fishing, outdoor recreation and rugged rural living along U.S. 2 near the Montana border.
Moyie Springs is a wilder version of North Idaho—river canyons, timbered hills, rural acreage and U.S. 2 disappearing east toward Montana. The Moyie River cuts through a dramatic canyon beside town before joining the Kootenai River, and once you move beyond the small city core, the landscape quickly becomes forest, larger parcels and country roads.
The incorporated city of Moyie Springs is small, but the Moyie Springs real estate market extends well beyond town. Buyers look here for wooded acreage, privacy, river access, shops and outbuildings, room for equipment and animals, and a more independent rural lifestyle while keeping Bonners Ferry only a short drive away.
There is another advantage that makes Moyie Springs unusual: Montana is in the other direction. U.S. Highway 2 runs east toward Troy and Libby, making this part of Boundary County feel connected to both North Idaho and western Montana.

Updated September 2026
Moyie Springs is a small market, so monthly statistics can swing considerably when only a handful of homes are listed or sold. Rural acreage, newer homes, properties inside the city and larger forested parcels outside town should be evaluated as separate micro-markets rather than relying on one average price.

After 30 years in real estate, I think Moyie Springs is exactly the kind of market where the acreage number by itself tells you almost nothing.
Five acres can mean usable ground, a shop and easy year-round access—or steep timber, challenging roads and very little level land. If hunting, recreational shooting, animals, equipment, gardening or simply not seeing your neighbors is part of the dream, those details need to be part of the search from the beginning.
In rural real estate, I'm interested in what the property lets you actually do, not just how many acres appear on the listing.
Moyie Springs appeals to people who want more independence, more outdoor access and less city around them. The small town provides a basic community center, while the surrounding countryside opens into wooded acreage, river canyons and public forest lands.
Buyers often look here for:
Moyie Springs is probably not the first place I'd send someone whose priorities are restaurants, shopping or a walkable downtown.
But if someone tells me, “I want some land, a shop, a river nearby and room to do my own thing,” Moyie Springs becomes much more interesting.
The rivers are what give Moyie Springs its identity. The Moyie River drops through a dramatic canyon before reaching the Kootenai, and the confluence near Twin Rivers creates one of the area's most distinctive recreation settings.
Idaho Fish and Game maintains a primitive Moyie River fishing-access site, and current fishing regulations set the Moyie River trout limit at two. The nearby Kootenai River supports rainbow and cutthroat trout, mountain whitefish and other species.
The area is also known for seasonal Moyie River rafting, particularly during spring runoff, while canoeing, kayaking, jet boating and floating are part of the broader Kootenai River recreation scene. The International Selkirk Loop describes rafting, canoeing and jet boating as some of Moyie Springs' signature outdoor activities.
Nearby forest country adds camping, hiking, hunting, huckleberry picking, motorized recreation and backcountry access. The Idaho Panhandle National Forests specifically manage the broader district for both motorized and non-motorized recreation.
For some buyers, the ability to hunt, practice with firearms or simply have enough land and privacy for an outdoor lifestyle is part of the reason they are looking in rural Boundary County.
The broader area has an active shooting community, including the Kootenai Valley Rifle and Pistol Club, which regularly appears on the Boundary County community calendar.
If shooting on your own property is important, however, never assume acreage automatically means firearm discharge is permitted. Before buying, Michael and I would want to verify the property's location, applicable city or county rules, neighboring homes, parcel boundaries, covenants, safe backstop conditions and seasonal fire restrictions.
That distinction is especially important here because a property inside Moyie Springs city limits and a rural acreage parcel several miles outside town can have very different considerations.
If recreational shooting is part of the lifestyle you want, tell us before we start looking. It's much easier to search for the right property than to discover after closing that the property doesn't work the way you expected.
Moyie Springs doesn't have a packed city festival calendar—and that's part of its character. Community gatherings tend to be smaller, more local and centered around City Hall and the broader Boundary County community.
One of the most consistent local traditions is the Moyie Springs Outdoor Market, held at City Hall on Saturdays from May through August. The 2026 market included local crafts, baked goods, handmade products, food and periodic live music.
Bonners Ferry is only a short drive west, so Moyie Springs residents also have easy access to larger Boundary County traditions such as the county fair, Kootenai River Days, farmers markets and Fourth of July events.
That's pretty representative of life here: small local gathering when you want it, acreage and quiet when you don't.
Moyie Springs is not a golf community, but golfers don't have to travel far. Nearby Mirror Lake Golf Course outside Bonners Ferry is a scenic nine-hole course with two sets of tees that allow it to play as an 18-hole experience.
The course looks across the Kootenai Valley toward the Selkirk Mountains, so even the nearest golf option still feels very much like Boundary County.
Bonners Ferry is the commercial and agricultural center of Boundary County; Moyie Springs feels smaller, more forested and more tied to the river canyon and the U.S. 2 corridor toward Montana.

Rural property around Moyie Springs deserves real due diligence. Depending on the property, Michael and I want buyers to understand well and septic systems, road ownership and winter maintenance, easements, surveys, usable acreage, utilities, internet and cell service, timber, fire protection, insurance, outbuilding uses and local land-use rules.
We would also look closely at terrain. The river canyon and forested landscape that make this area beautiful can also mean steep property, challenging access and parcels where the usable acreage is very different from the total acreage.
The goal isn't simply to buy more land.
It's to buy land that works.
Moyie Springs can be a good fit for buyers who want a small North Idaho community with access to acreage, rivers, forests and outdoor recreation. It is considerably more rural than Coeur d'Alene or Sandpoint, while Bonners Ferry remains close enough for everyday services.
Moyie Springs is roughly eight to nine miles east of Bonners Ferry along U.S. Highway 2. That makes hospital care, groceries and other Boundary County services relatively convenient while allowing buyers to live in a much more rural setting.
Troy, Montana is roughly 25–30 miles east of Moyie Springs on U.S. 2, while Libby is approximately 44 miles away. That location makes Moyie Springs one of the North Idaho communities with particularly convenient access to western Montana.
Yes. The Moyie River is open to fishing under Idaho Fish and Game regulations, with a current special trout limit of two fish. The nearby Kootenai River adds additional fishing opportunities.
Possibly, but acreage alone does not establish that recreational shooting is legal or safe on a particular property. City or county regulations, neighboring homes, covenants, land ownership, safe shooting direction and seasonal fire restrictions should all be verified before purchasing with that use in mind.
Bonners Ferry is larger, more agricultural and provides more everyday services, while Moyie Springs is smaller, more forested and more closely identified with the Moyie River canyon, rural acreage and the highway corridor toward Montana.
